Two moon-inspired Geisha Lots from Black Moon Farm’s second harvest

We have the honour to have obtained two gems from Hunter Tedman and the team at Black Moon Farm. The two microlots are part of the farm’s second harvest since the newly-planted geisha trees (and farm for that matter) was established in 2018. We had the privilege of working together in 2022 with their maiden harvest, and it was a sell-out. These exclusive microlots, are part of our special Caldera • Reserva.

Scorpion Lot – Geisha Anaerobic Natural

Our Scorpion Lot was harvested during the crescent moon, fermented with coffee yeasts in an anaerobic system for 72 hours, and dried in a dark room for 30 days. It was then stored in sealed bags and rested for two months.

Solar Eclipse Lot – Geisha Anaerobic Natural

This batch was harvested during the waning moon. The fermentation process was conducted using beer yeasts that were activated in a culture medium of coffee cherry mucilage with CO2 for 72 hours. After drying for 30 days in a dark room, it was stored in sealed bags to rest for two months.

Origin

Black Moon Farm is located in Alto Quiel, Boquete, Chiriquí at an elevation of 1,700 to 1,780 m.a.s.l. The farm used to be a vegetable farm with degraded and eroded soil. Owner and Q Grader, Hunter Tedman, aims to restore soil fertility and microbial life through regenerative agriculture.

In 2018, when the first coffee trees were planted, an additional four thousand trees of different species were added to grow a biodiverse forest canopy. Some species have been specifically planted to support the growth of the coffee trees under their shade, others to help trap nitrogen and others to produce food for the animals that help with pollination. Hunter’s goal is to establish a clean coffee production by trapping as much of the generated carbon back into the soil to naturally fertilise it.

In 2022, Black Moon Farm had its first Geisha harvest. Their Natural and Washed lots scored 93.5 and 92.5 respectively in SCAP’s 2022 BoP event.
