Full moon, waning moon, waxing moon, Black Moon
What do you say when not one but two Black Moon lots make their appearance on a full moon day?
In the world of specialty coffee, timing is everything. And when two exceptional Black Moon lots coincide with a full moon, it's a cosmic event worth savoring. Today, we're thrilled to introduce two extraordinary coffees that have aligned under these auspicious circumstances: Geisha Washed - Lot 22 and Chiroso Anaerobic Natural - Batch #70.
Geisha Washed – Lot 22
This batch was harvested on the waxing moon in Leo (20 March 2024). Fermented with beer yeasts in an anaerobic system for 24 hours. After the fermentation time it entered a dark drying room for 15 days. It was then sealed, stored in bags, and left to rest for three months.
The result? A cup that sings with notes of jasmine, lime, and Earl Grey.
Chiroso Anaerobic Natural – Batch #70
Chiroso, an Ethiopian Landrace variety recently discovered in Colombia, has captivated coffee enthusiasts with its distinctive flavor profile. Black Moon Farm’s Chiroso is genetically pure, boasting a complex array of aromas and flavors enhanced by its unique terroir. This marks the farm's second harvest from plants cultivated four years ago.
Harvested during the waning moon in Libra, the beans underwent 48-hour anaerobic fermentation followed by a 12-hour oxidation period, then drying in a dark room for 60 days and finally rested in sealed bags for 4 months. The resulting profile boasts rich flavors of mulberry, prune, and black tea.
Origin
Black Moon Farm is located in Alto Quiel, Boquete, Chiriquí at an elevation of 1,700 to 1,780 m.a.s.l. The farm used to be a vegetable farm with degraded and eroded soil. Owner and Q-Grader, Hunter Tedman, aims to restore soil fertility and microbial life through regenerative agriculture.
In 2018, when the first coffee trees were planted, an additional four thousand trees of different species were added to grow a biodiverse forest canopy. Some species have been specifically planted to support the growth of the coffee trees under their shade, others to help trap nitrogen and others to produce food for the animals that help with pollination. Hunter’s goal is to establish a clean coffee production by trapping as much of the generated carbon back into the soil to naturally fertilise it.
Black Moon Farm won 1st place in the category of Varietals at the 2024 Best of Panama competition with its Constellation Chiroso Lot. Prior to that, Black Moon Farm’s Natural and Washed Lots from their first-ever harvest scored 93.5 and 92.5 respectively in SCAP’s 2022 BoP event.
A cosmic convergence
The appearance of these two Black Moon lots on a full moon day (the day we officially announced it) is more than just a coincidence—it’s a celebration of the intricate dance between nature, agriculture, and artisanal craftsmanship. Each cup tells a story of precise timing and the dedication of farmers, roasters (and coffee connoisseurs alike) who understand that exceptional coffee is worth the wait.
We invite you to experience these celestial offerings for yourself. Whether you're drawn to the floral elegance of the Geisha or the bold complexity of the Chiroso, these limited lots offer a taste of coffee at its most sublime. Don’t miss your chance to sip on these stars—they’re truly out of this world.
