About Café Gallardo

Café Gallardo started when José Gallardo’s father came to the region in 1960 and started to plant coffee. At that time, the Gallardo family farms only produced Caturra and Catuai coffee varieties at lower elevations until about sixteen years ago when José saw the potential of Nuguo and started growing Geisha varietal coffee plants.

The secret of Nuguo’s success is owed to José Gallardo’s hard work, dedication and near obsession to grow and process exceptional specialty coffee as well as his wife Aileene’s creative flavour inspiration.

Café Gallardo’s coffee has been awarded several top spots in the Best of Panama Exotic Washed, Exotic Natural and Innovation categories in 2015, 2016 and 2020 and won of the Best of Panama Cup 2021 and 1st and 2nd Place for Nuguo Geisha Natural and Washed respectively.

About Carmencita Lot

(by the former owners and current administrators of Finca Carmen)

Finca Carmen is located in Paso Ancho, Tierras Altas, Chiriquí, Panamá. The area, known as Valle del Volcán – rich with black volcanic soil and a privileged microclimate – follows the river Chiriquí Viejo on its course from Cerro Punta to the Pacific Ocean. The cool, frost-free nights of the area coupled with dry, sun-drenched days combine to create ideal coffee growing conditions.

The Estate which sits at 1,900 m.a.s.l. was established by Efraín and Carmen Franceschi, who started cultivating arabica varietals in 1960. Today, Carlos Aguilera, the third generation of the family, runs Finca Carmen.*

Since 2003, Finca Carmen has placed in the top ten at Best of Panama competitions. In 2020, Carmen Gran Reserva placed 1st in the Traditional Washed category, and in 2021, its Carmen Geisha Especial, Natural process earned 6th place with an SCA of 92.5

The family’s passion and dedication to quality is equally reflected in their commitment to providing safe and healthy conditions for the indigenous Ngöbe-Buglé workers and their families. They are provided with adequate healthcare, a clean work environment and living space, and schooling for their children.

Finca Carmen's agricultural practices are based on a set of principles that ensure optimal farm performance while remaining ecologically conscious in terms of insect management, soil conservation, natural water conservation, waste management and overall ecosystem protection. Since 2014 Finca Carmen has been verified by the Coffee And Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices  – a programme that measures farms against economic, social and environmental criteria.

*Additional information

We feel it is essential to also highlight that this Carmencita lot is being managed independently, by the Aguilera family, from other lots managed under Panama Red Carmen Cafe Trading S.A., the local company of the China-based owners of Carmen Estate. It is an independent lot of approximately ten hectares managed by the Aguilera family.

About Las Brumas Panama Coffee Farm

Las Brumas – Spanish for The Mists – is located in the township of Santa Clara, Renacimiento, Chiriquí, Panamá just a few kilometers from La Amistad International Park. The term Brumas with which the farm is identified arises as a result of the mist that generally surrounds the farm, mainly at dusk. The cloud cover (permanent winds with rain intervals and sun) provides excellent conditions for coffee growing, highlighting extraordinary cup profiles.

The coffee plantation encompasses 24.5 hectares at a height of 1,360 m.a.s.l at its lowest to around 1,490 m.a.s.l. at its highest point.

Over the years, Las Brumas has become known for its Caturra and Catuai varietals (and blends) which have earned the farm several awards in Best of Panama competitions.

In 2019, Las Brumas’ Caturra-Catuai won first place in the category of Traditional Natural and Special Process with an SCA score of 89.25.

The Pacamara and Geisha varietals were reintroduced to the farm in 2015. Finca Las Brumas’ “Pacamara Triple A” won second place in the category of Varietals at the 2022 Best of Panama International Competition with an SCA score of 92.07.

César Araúz has been managing his family’s farm since 2009 and dedicates his efforts to preserving its pristine ecology. Under César, a Q grader himself, the farm endeavors to implement good agricultural practices that tend to the environment, such as banning the use of herbicides. During harvest, the entirety of the farm’s workforce is seasonal workers from the Ngäbe-Buglé indigenous people who expertly hand-pick the ripe cherries.

About Black Moon Farm

Black Moon Farm is located in Alto Quiel, Boquete, Chiriquí between 1,700 and 1,780 m.a.s.l. in what used to be a vegetable farm. Owner and Q Grader, Hunter Tedman, comes from a multi-generational coffee growing family and has transformed the farm focusing on 'regenerative agriculture'. In 2018, when the first coffee trees were planted, an additional four thousand trees of different species were added to grow a biodiverse forest canopy. Some species have been specifically planted to support the growth of the coffee trees under their shade, others to help trap nitrogen and others to produce food for the animals that help with pollination. Hunter’s goal is to establish a clean coffee production by trapping as much of the generated carbon back into the soil to naturally fertilise it.

2022 is Black Moon Farm’s first Geisha harvest. Their Natural and Washed lots entered to SCAP’s BoP Auction scored 93.5 and 92.5 respectively.

About Janson Coffee Farm

This family-run farm was established by brothers Carl, Michael, Ricardo and Peter Janson – sons of Carl Axel Janson who came to Panama from Sweden in 1941.

The Janson’s are firmly committed to the environment. The farm is sustainably run – mountain spring water is used for the washed process; the best pulp of the Geisha is used to produce cascara tea and the rest of the pulp is used for compost to make fertilizer. The dry parchment is used as fuel for the dryers, and the rest of the energy is generated by 400 solar panels.

Located in the Paso Ancho area of the Tierras Altas district, in Chiriquí Province, Panama. Finca Los Cantares is a fifty-hectare estate growing Geisha trees at 1,650 m.a.s.l. – the highest point within the farm.

Our Geisha washed Lot is from this year’s harvest, the first in two years since the Covid pandemic brought the harvest to an almost complete halt. The cherries, as a result, were left to grow naturally without much tending by the farm – a true wild geisha.

About Mi Finquita by Ratibor Hartmann

Ratibor Hartmann’s family has been producing coffee in the Renacimiento region for over a hundred years, starting with his grandfather – Alois St. Hartmann. Alois – who later changed his name to Luis – was born in Czechoslovakia in 1891 and emigrated to the United States at the beginning of the First World War in 1914. He later migrated to Panama where he purchased land in Chiriquí and began growing the first coffee trees on the Hartmann Estate.

Ratibor´s over 30 years experience as a coffee consultant in overseas markets has led him to specialise in artisan and experimental processes, designing to specific flavour profiles. The work is scientific, methodical, and complex, but above all, prudent. Ratibor believes it’s important to respect the intrinsic characteristics of each varietal.

Mi Finquita has won top accolades in recent Best of Panama competitions. It won 2nd place in 2021 BoP XXV in the Geisha Natural category with a Lot scoring 93.25 points, and 3rd place in the Geisha Washed category with a Lot scoring 93 points.

About Finca Lérida

Founded in 1924 by ex-Panama Canal engineer Toleff Bache Mönniche from Norway who built the first coffee plantation by gravity in Panama. He also designed and patented the “sifon”, a device made to separate good beans from the bad. This device is being used worldwide by many coffee plantations and it is still working in Finca Lerida where Mönniche’s old processing plant still processes coffee of excellent quality.

Finca Lérida is conformed by five farms ranging between 1,500 and 2,000 meters in altitude and its present owners are the Amoruso family.

ASD or Anaerobic Slow Dry, is the process where the coffee is placed with its pulp into fermentation tanks for 120 hours, and then placed onto drying beds with a thick layer for a total of five weeks. This process tends to produce unexpected and unique flavours thanks to the influence of the microorganisms during fermentation.
